Many travelers may ask „why visit Budapest?”, „why is the capital of Hungary so special?” We could answer that our city is astonishingly beautiful and that there are many historical and cultural monuments to visit but we know that the travel guides have already told these reasons many times.
A mixture of old and new
The beauty of Budapest lies in the diverse cultural influences it received during its long history. The mixing of the growing influence of Western capitalism and the effects of more than 40 years of communist era gives our city a unique appeal.
Thermal baths, medical baths
You can swim in the turkish baths (Király bath, Rudas and Veli Bej Spa) and enjoy the hundred years old architecture and also go to the thermal baths (Gellért, Széchenyi). There is also a wide range of spa and wellness hotels (Margitsziget Danubius health Spa Resort, Spa in the Royal Corinthia Grand Hotel Royal etc.). There are several medical baths in Budapest and other cities in Hungary. Budapest is the perfect spot to relax in a spa or in a wellness hotel and receive a massage.
An affordable city
Hungary’s capital is cheap compared to Prague or Vienna. Although prices have steadily increased since the mid-90s, you can still receive more services for your money than in most other capitals of Western Europe (especially when the Forint is low).

An intense nightlife
Budapest has a buzzing nightlife with pubs, bars and outdoor clubs. There are of course a few places that tourists should avoid or where tourists are usually ripped off (some of these clubs have recently been closed by local authorities).
A wide variety of cultural activities
There is always something to do in Budapest, regardless the season. There are major festivals throughout the year (spring and fall festivals are the two biggest cultural events). More than 100 museums welcome tourists around the themes of contemporary arts, science, history and gastronomy. The Hungarian State Opera House on Andrassy Avenue is a beautiful architectural monument to see.
Shopping
There are several shopping centers; the largest are Arena Plaza, West End City Center Campona. These are ideal places to buy designer clothes, electronics, books, jewelry, food and other gifts. If you want to buy Hungarian specialties (paprika, honey, Tokaj wine …) visit the Central Market on the Pest side of the Liberty Bridge. The city center (Váci street and its surroundings in the 5th district, Andrássy Street in the 5th) houses the biggest brands Roberto Cavalli, Louis Vuitton, Ermenegildo Zegna, Gucci, Hugo Boss, Escada, Furla etc …
Restaurants and Hungarian specialties
Budapest has many Hungarian and foreign restaurants and also many fast food restaurants. You can find streets and neighborhoods specialized in catering and cafes, for example: Liszt Ferenc square and Ráday street.
During the summer, restaurants, cafes and pubs run outdoor terraces. They are not necessarily the best places to have a great dining experience as they target tourists with expensive menus but there are still a few affordable restaurants.
Places to taste the excellent Hungarian wines
Hungary has 20 wine regions; the best known are Tokaj, Eger, Szekszárd and Villány. The best place to find them is to go into the cellar of the Buda Castle where a sommelier will tell you great stories about the wines while sampling delicious white wines and red wines. If you have time try Etyek village, west from Budapest. A direct transfer takes you to the town and you can discover the wineries, meet the producers and taste their wines. The program ends with an excellent dinner, and then a car takes you back to Budapest.
Late holidays
Unlike other cities, Budapest is not sleeping during the winter. The national tourist board offers attractive packages for winter vacation (3 for 2 or 4 nights for the price of 3).
